This was the site of an old veterans’ hospital, the main building was structurally unsound and was to be replaced while the rest of the complex was to be renovated into an extended care facility.
The design created a new residence for the ambulatory with a two-storey ‘street’ lined with cafés, cinemas, shops, barbers, physiotherapy, clinics and a bar – the place of choice after a walk on this street.
The restaurant is the loveliest in town but the food is ‘hospital’; I got carried away.
The typical floors are actually rather fun places. The windows open, each has an arcing cafeé overlooking the garden and a glazed circular lounge from which the inhabitants can look out at the world.
