Ron Keenberg
Delta Marsh (Bird Shack)
Delta Marsh, Manitoba
The Delta Marsh “Birdshack” is a distinctive architectural project by IKOY Architects, located at Delta Marsh in Manitoba and is Keenberg’s ode to conservation. It is actually a shack created by Keenberg for all the IKOY partners for hunting trips. The “Birdshack” is known for its innovative design which celebrates the partners reverance for nature.
The Birdshack design is a metaphor for the hunt, being “ripped” and “shot”. The rips frame the sky and the fields and the marsh beyond. Keenberg especially wanted a structure that was true, exposed and raw, but not crude. Every inch of the design counts.
The buidling was completed in a few days by the IKOY partners themselves with the help of a few others.
Structure:
The entire building is made of wood that could be transported easily to site and erected quickly by a small number of relatively inexperienced people.
Completed:
1989
Project Cost:
$9,000
Building Area:
20 m2 with a sleeping loft of another 7 m2
The Building can sleep, feed and lounge 4.
Awards:
The “Birdshack” won the prestigious Governor General’s Award in 1990.
