Built on a bit of boggy tundra, this remote building would have been accessible only by a winter road.

This was one of the last projects Public Works ‘built’ for the aboriginal community, a shame as the bands developed, shall I say an interesting way of retaining architects. It was my last.

The people in these remote locations wanted and got buildings that were the same as those built on Toronto or Winnipeg at great expense to the taxpayer.

I had an idea. I’d design a building that was light, easy to transport on the winter road and one that could be assembled by the unskilled local labour.

Did I get points? NO!

Steel structure versus masonry, steel studs with ridgidized rolled metal siding versus wood studs with drywall, and rolled corrugated siding versus brick.

They used power drivers and did most of the work with local people.

After we left, they went back to masonry; they’re not the only. ‘Victorian’ culture in Canada.
