The City of Winnipeg had transformed a flat prairie garbage dump into a hilly park with lakes, a golf course, tennis courts and boating in the summer. In the winter, there was cross-country skiing, skating and snowshoeing. Then they had a competition for a ‘thematic visitor centre’. Our competitors each submitted one building to house all the functions, like all other suburban ‘community centres’.

Even though we had pursued the competition, IKOY had done no work for the city, so I had some fun.

Remember, it gets very, very cold in Winnipeg. So, I designed a village with six separate structures forming a ‘square’ at the waterfront docks. Everyone that would come to the park would be doing something outside, whatever time of year it was.

IKOY won its first competition.
