On an urban park, 5 minutes from the office, I built the family house for $60,000 including the land.
It was like a New York townhouse, narrow with solid sidewalls to my neighbours, even though I had side yards. Glazed to the park, the full wall, two storeys high and yes the back was glazed too, to the pool.
The long walls varied in height from 8 to 17 to 20 feet and were delightful places to set an art collection.
The children liked the pool, however, they never really forgave me for their bedrooms. All 3 of them, equal in size, were modeled after my dormitory room in Brooklyn: 6-foot 6-inch wide by 13 foot long ‘cells’.
I, on the other hand, lived there happily for 25 years.
I sold it to an acquaintance who has respected the design and made a few lovely new moves to make it his. It’s a pleasure to see it stand the test of time, a modern minimalist design that still works.
